The Lyneham Commons Food Forest Project is part of a world wide movement of urban people to bring food growing to urban spaces. We are driven by a number of things:
- concerns about food security in the context of peak oil and climate change
- a desire to bring an awareness of the important of growing food and sustainable living to our neighbours and friends
- a vision of food growing in abundance in sustainable ecosystems in open, public unused spaces across the city – accessible to all
- ideas about cultivating community social capital through the sharing of a food growing space
But while we see our place in this broad and varied movement we are just a small fledgling local group living, working and playing in and around the suburb of Lyneham in Canberra Australia.
Our particular vision is to work with our local government to transform a piece of highly accessible local public unused land into a sustainable holistic food space that retains its public character.
